The duty of preaching in Islam is a profound responsibility that has been upheld by dedicated individuals throughout history. Every religion has individuals who dedicate their lives to spreading its teachings. These committed souls are often revered by their communities, and Islam is no exception. Throughout Islamic history, certain individuals have consistently devoted their efforts to propagating the faith, emphasizing the importance of this sacred duty. This blog explores the significance of preaching in Islam, the characteristics of a true preacher, and the enduring legacy of figures like Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani—a luminary in Islamic history.
The Sacred Duty of Preaching
The duty of preaching in Islam is not limited to scholars or specific groups. Allah has assigned this responsibility to every believer. In the early days of Islam, new converts eagerly embraced this duty, actively spreading the message of Islam. This collective commitment led to the rapid expansion of the faith across the globe. However, over time, the general Muslim populace began to neglect this obligation, leaving it to specific groups such as scholars, mystics, and devout individuals.
Despite this decline, certain groups have tirelessly continued the mission of preaching. The duty of preaching in Islam remains a cornerstone of faith, emphasizing the importance of guiding others towards the path of righteousness and salvation.
The Legacy of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani
Among the most renowned figures in the history of Islamic preaching is Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani. His life and works stand as a testament to the dedication required for this sacred mission. One of his most celebrated contributions is his book, Ghunyat al-Talibeen. Translated into Urdu by Allama Muhammad Siddique Hazarvi, this masterpiece not only addresses Islamic jurisprudence but also delves into the ethics of living a pious life and the principles of Sufism.

In this book, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani outlines the key etiquettes and principles of preaching. These guidelines are as relevant today as they were centuries ago, offering invaluable insights for anyone aspiring to fulfill the duty of preaching in Islam.
Five Essential Principles of Preaching
In Ghunyat al-Talibeen, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani emphasizes five fundamental principles for effective preaching:
- Sincerity of Intent A preacher must have pure intentions, seeking Allah’s pleasure rather than personal gain or recognition. Sincerity ensures that the message is conveyed with genuine care and compassion.
- Knowledge and Understanding A preacher must possess a deep understanding of Islamic teachings and jurisprudence. Ignorance can lead to misguidance, which contradicts the essence of preaching.
- Compassion and Patience Preaching requires a compassionate and patient approach. The duty of preaching in Islam demands understanding and tolerance, especially when addressing individuals with differing perspectives.
- Avoiding Arrogance A preacher should remain humble, avoiding any sense of superiority over those they guide. Humility fosters trust and respect, making the message more impactful.
- Adherence to Personal Piety A preacher’s actions must align with their words. Living a pious life serves as a powerful example, reinforcing the credibility of their message.
The Role of Communities in Supporting Preachers
Communities play a vital role in enabling the success of preachers. Recognizing their efforts, providing moral and financial support, and respecting their mission are essential aspects of fostering a culture of Islamic propagation. By doing so, societies ensure that the duty of preaching in Islam is carried out effectively, inspiring future generations to uphold this sacred responsibility.
Reviving the Spirit of Preaching
To restore the essence of this noble duty, Muslims must reignite their commitment to preaching. This involves not only individual efforts but also collective action, emphasizing the importance of unity in spreading the message of Islam. By following the teachings of luminaries like Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani, Muslims can ensure that the duty of preaching in Islam remains a vibrant and integral part of their faith.
Conclusion
The duty of preaching in Islam is a profound responsibility that requires dedication, knowledge, and compassion. Figures like Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani have left an indelible mark, guiding generations on the principles of effective preaching. By embracing this sacred duty, Muslims can continue to spread the light of Islam, fulfilling their divine obligation and contributing to a more harmonious and righteous world.
