The sweet temptation of desserts is a universal indulgence, but like everything else, moderation is the key. Overindulgence in sugary treats can harm the human body, yet some people’s obsession with sweets knows no bounds. They are so driven by their cravings that they disregard their health and sometimes even stoop to unfair means, risking their dignity for a moment of blissful sweetness.
This amusing reality forms the basis of a delightful story by Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Radolvi, featured in Dr. Mazhar Ahmed’s compilation “Urdu Ke Mazahiya Afsane”. The anthology collects humorous stories from celebrated Urdu authors, showcasing wit, irony, and human quirks. While this particular story’s source remains elusive, its humorous essence makes it unforgettable. If you have more information about Chaudhry Muhammad Ali’s works, do share in the comments.
A Journey Marked by Sweet Temptation
Set in the cultural backdrop of Lucknow, the story narrates a fascinating incident during a journey. A Nawab Sahib, on his way to attend a court hearing, carried a box of sweets as a gift for someone. His faithful servant accompanied him, but alas, even the most loyal hearts can succumb to the sweet temptation.

The servant’s intentions wavered as he eyed the enticing box of sweets. Despite knowing it wasn’t his to take, he could not resist the temptation. Driven by greed, he devised a cunning plan to steal the sweets while ensuring he didn’t get caught.
The Mischievous Plan
The servant’s strategy was as devious as it was humorous. Seizing an opportune moment, he discreetly consumed the sweets. But his real genius lay in crafting an alibi. He blamed the disappearance of the sweets on a dog, claiming that the animal had devoured the box while they were distracted. The Nawab, trusting his servant, initially accepted the explanation.
Sweet Temptation Exposed
However, lies have a way of unraveling. The servant’s overindulgence in the sweets left evidence of his guilt. Whether it was the sticky residue on his hands or the unmistakable satisfaction on his face, the Nawab soon realized the truth. The revelation turned the somber journey into a comedy of errors.
The Hilarious Conclusion
When confronted, the servant’s sheepish admission of his crime left everyone in stitches. The Nawab’s frustration turned into amusement as he recounted the servant’s creative deceit. The story concludes with a lesson wrapped in laughter: unchecked greed can lead to comical yet embarrassing situations.
Why the Tale Resonates
This story, like many humorous anecdotes, resonates because of its relatability. Who hasn’t been tempted by something irresistible? The sweet temptation here is a metaphor for human weaknesses and the lengths we go to justify our actions. The humor lies in the servant’s audacity and the absurdity of his plan.
Lessons from Sweet Temptation
- Moderation is Key: Whether it’s sweets or other indulgences, excess can lead to trouble.
- Honesty is the Best Policy: Lies, no matter how clever, often unravel.
- Humor in Everyday Life: Even mundane situations can offer laughter and insight.
