In the dense forests of Mannanur, part of the former Hyderabad State in Deccan, a terrifying tale unfolded. The story revolves around a man-eating leopard, a predator that seems to prey exclusively on women. No one knew how it became a man-eater or why it targeted women alone. However, superstitions quickly took hold. Villagers spread rumors that the leopard was a malevolent spirit or perhaps a deity demanding sacrifices. These beliefs added to the terror it instilled in the local population.
The poor Hindu villagers of Mannanur, gripped by fear, would often banish a helpless widow from their community whenever they heard the leopard’s cries. Inevitably, the predator claimed her as its next victim. Over time, the leopard devoured more than a hundred women, earning it the ominous title of the “Devil of Mannanur.”
Nazar Mohammad Khan Enters the Scene
The narrative’s hero, Nazar Mohammad Khan, was a government employee known for his courage, sharpshooting skills, and successful hunting expeditions. When Khan was posted to this perilous region, he was given a daunting mission: to end the terror caused by the Mannanur leopard. His first step was to analyze why previous hunting attempts had failed. He discovered that heavily equipped hunting parties, with all their noise and preparation, often alerted the clever predator, which would then escape unnoticed.
Khan realized that to outwit this cunning adversary, he needed a different approach. He meticulously mapped the leopard’s hunting territory, noting where and how frequently it attacked. This strategic analysis became the foundation of his plan to eliminate the menace of the Mannanur leopard.
A Bold and Dangerous Plan
One critical aspect of Khan’s strategy was bait—but not just any bait. Since the leopard specifically targeted women, Khan needed a brave woman willing to act as a decoy. It was a heart-wrenching decision, but a courageous widow volunteered for the task. She sat on the front seat of a bullock cart, ready to lure the predator into Khan’s trap. Her bravery cannot be overstated; she risked her life to protect her community from the Mannanur leopard.
For Khan, the moral burden of using a human as bait was immense. He felt the weight of responsibility for her life and was determined to ensure her safety. This plan was not without risks, but it was the only viable option to outsmart the beast that had terrorized the region for years.
The Final Encounter
The fateful day arrived when Khan and his team set their plan into motion. They ventured deep into the leopard’s hunting grounds, with the widow seated prominently on the cart. Khan’s sharp eyes scanned the dense foliage, his rifle ready. The atmosphere was tense, each moment stretching into an eternity.
When the leopard finally appeared, it was a moment of life and death. Khan’s calculated preparation paid off as he took the decisive shot, killing the predator and ending its reign of terror. The villagers’ relief was palpable; they could finally sleep without fear. The Mannanur leopard was no more.

منانور(ریاست حیدرآباد،دکن)کےگھنےجنگلات میں رہنےوالےایک آدم خور چیتےکی داستان۔ کسی کونہیں پتہ تھا کہ وہ آدم خور کیسے بنا اورکیوں وہ صرف عورتوں کوہی اپناشکاربناتاہے؟۔ البتہ اس کےبارے میں یہ افواہ اڑادی گئی کہ وہ ایک بدروح ہے،جوعورتوں کی دشمن ہے یاپھر کوئی دیوی، جوعورتوں کی بھینٹ لیتی ہے۔ منانور کےدیہات میں رہنےوالےغریب ہندو عوام چیتے کی آوازسن کر کسی غریب بیوہ کو گاؤں سے باہرکردیتے،جس کو وہ درندہ اپناشکار بنالیتا۔ یوں وہ اب تک سو سےزائدعورتوں کو کھاچکاتھا۔
پھر اس کہانی کےراوی نذرمحمدخان کی پوسٹنگ اس علاقے میں ہوگئی۔ وہ ایک عام سے سرکاری ملازم تھے مگر اپنی بہادری، نشانہ بازی اور کامیاب شکاری مہمات کی وجہ سے مشہور تھے۔ تقرری کےچند روزبعدہی انہیں اس درندے کوکیفرِکردارتک پہنچانےکاحکم ملا۔ انہوں نےاس بات پرغورکیاکہ اب تک اس کی تلاش میں جانےوالےکیوں ناکام ہوئے تھے تو پتہ چلا کہ وہ چوںکہ بھاری سازوسامان اورانتظامات کےساتھ جاتے تھے اور چیتا، جو آدم خوربن جانےکےبعد انتہائی چالاک اورعیار ہوجاتاہے، ان انتظامات کوبھانپ کر اپناراستہ بدل لیتاتھا۔ لہٰذا انہوں نے اس شیطان کی اس فطرت کوسامنے رکھتے ہوئے اس کےشکار کامنصوبہ بنایا۔
ایک چیز اور، جوانہوں نےنوٹ کی کہ اس کےشکار کاعلاقہ کون ساتھا۔ یعنی کہاں سے کہاں تک پھیلا ہواتھا۔ اور کتنے عرصے بعد اس نےکہاں شکار کیاتھا۔ اس نقشے کوترتیب دینےسے انہیں اپنامنصوبہ بنانے میں بڑی مدد ملی۔ مگر ان کےمنصوبےمیں بڑی رکاوٹ ایک عورت کی کمی تھی۔ وہ چاہتے تھے کہ کوئی عورت ان کےساتھ اس سفر پر روانہ ہو،جو انہوں نےچیتے کےشکار کےلئے ترتیب دیاتھا۔ کیوں کہ چیتا بطورِخاص عورتوں کوشکار کرتاتھا۔
آخر ایک بیوہ عورت نےاپنےآپ کوبطورِ رضاکار پیش کر ہی دیا۔ یہ خاتون بڑی بہادری کےساتھ بیل گاڑی کی اگلی نشست پر بیٹھی تھیں۔ راوی ایک انسانی جان کو یوں چارے کےطور پراستعمال کرنےکےفیصلےسے خوش نہ تھے، کیوں کہ اس طرح ان پر ایک بھاری ذمہ داری آپڑی تھی۔ مگر اس مُوذی کوہلاک کرنےکےلئے یہ فیصلہ ناگزیر تھا۔ آخر وہ گھڑی آ ہی گئی۔ کس طرح شکاری نے اس آدم خور کوہلاک کیا؟۔ یہ آپ اس ویڈیومیں سنیں گے۔
