Do you know when the first women’s autobiography in Urdu was written and by whom?
The daughter of the Nawab Pataudi Akbar Ali Khan, Shaherbano Begum, authored her life story at the request of her classmate, Miss Fletcher. This autobiography covers her life from birth to the age of forty. Although Shaherbano Begum was not highly educated and made spelling mistakes in her writing, her style of expression is remarkably simple & charming, reflecting the common vernacular of her time. Additionally, the autobiography mentions the hardships faced by her family following the 1857 War of Independence. It has been compiled by Dr. Moinuddin Aqeel, who also wrote the introduction, excerpts of which will be read and shared in this video.

ہندوستانی ریاست پٹودی کےنواب اکبرعلی خان کی صاحب زادی شہربانو بیگم نے اپنی ہم سبق مس فلیچر کی فرمائش پر اپنی زندگی کی کہانی تحریرکی۔ یہ ان کی پیدائش سے چالیس سال کی عمر تک کااحاطہ کرتی ہے۔ شہربانوبیگم زیادہ پڑھی لکھی نہ تھیں، اس وجہ سے اس آپ بیتی میں املا کی غلطیاں ہیں، مگر اس کا اندازِبیان بہت سادہ اوردلکش ہے۔ اوراس زمانے کی عام بول چال کااس سےپتہ چلتاہے۔ نیز 1857ء کی جنگِ آزادی کے بعد اس خاندان کی مشکلات کا بھی اس خودنوشت میں ذکرہے۔ اسے ڈاکٹرمعین الدّین عقیل نے”بیتی کہانی”کےنام سے مرتب کیاہے اورانہوں نےہی اس کامقدمہ بھی تحریرکیاہے، جس کےکچھ اقتباسات بزمِ خواتین کی اس ویڈیو میں پڑھ کرسنائےجارہےہیں۔
