The official description of the novel confirms that the woman is suffering from acute amnesia and that the initials belong to a leading Chinese atomic scientist.

The woman is identified as Erica Olsen, the mistress of Chinese scientist Fang Ho Kung. Chinese authorities want her eliminated before she can reveal sensitive information, while American and Russian agents have their own reasons for wanting to find her.

Mark Girland Gets the Mission
At this critical moment, the CIA turns to Mark Girland.
Girland is not entering this dangerous game simply out of loyalty or patriotism. He needs money, and the assignment gives him a reason to become involved. His mission is to take Erica from the hospital and move her to a safe location.
But there is a problem.
Girland soon discovers that he is not the only professional operative following Erica.
His old Russian adversary, Malik, appears on the scene. Malik manages to overpower Girland and abduct the woman. Will Girland simply lose his target?
Not a chance.
Girland tracks Malik down, recovers Erica, and resumes his dangerous mission. But his next task is almost as extraordinary as the first: he must take Erica to Dorey’s mountain villa and pretend to be her husband.

Ginny Makes a Fatal Mistake
There is another person caught up in Girland’s complicated mission: a young hospital nurse named Ginny.

She dyes her hair red, making herself look like Erica.

The Black Grape is actually an extremely rare pearl from Fang Ho Kung’s collection of precious antiques. Its unusual appearance makes it resemble a black grape.

Girland learns more about it while staying at a friend’s apartment. Soon, he begins to suspect that the mysterious pearl may be in Erica’s possession.
And that discovery changes everything.
